Sawpit s/t 7″ (Ebullition/Vernacular 1996): I originally picked this 7″ up because it was on Ebullition and dirt cheap. I know what you’re thinking and yes, that describes a lot of 7″s from the 90’s. But there have been a good handful of weird random Ebullition records that ended up really impressing me. This is one of them.
Sawpit was a band from Japan that played some truly original hardcore punk. This is equal parts Inside Out and Fugazi, pop punk and hardcore, aggression and raw emotion. The thing that makes Sawpit stand above many other bands of this style is their ability to seamlessly integrate all of these influences without it seeming contrived or confused. These four songs each stand well on their own while managing to still fit in with the rest of Sawpit’s output. This, to me, is the mark of a truly solid band. You WILL see this in a dollar bin, so pick it up next time, ok?
