The Humdingers – Once Upon A Summertime… 7″ (Lance Harbor Records, 1996): Yet another lost mid-90’s Chicago gem, this is the first EP by the Chicago suburbs’ own THE HUMDINGERS. The first time I heard this band on the More Than Music compilation 10″ (also on Lance Harbor Records), I had to stop for a second because I genuinely believed Ben Weasel was handling vocal duties. He wasn’t and on this 7″ the vocal similarities are slightly less striking, but certainly the comparison could still be made. The music isn’t so far off either – pop punk that’s driving, snotty, slightly juvenile without being totally boneheaded and is done very well. Just look at that cover. For fans of that kind of thing (such as myself), this will be a record that merits repeat listens. The band would also go on to release a 10″ that I plan on uploading in the not too distant future. Until then, hopefully these four tracks can hold you over.
Oh yeah, this band apparently also had a member that went on to be in ALLISTER. Weird.
